Exclusive: UK dispute system ripe for change

In a TPWeek roundtable, tax disputes specialists discuss alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and whether there is a place for a formal mediation process in the UK.
Participants in the roundtable, which was sponsored by Olswang, were Ian Brimicombe, group head of tax at pharmaceuticals company AstraZeneca that this year settled a major transfer pricing dispute for £505 million ($779 million); Diane Hay, now a special adviser, international tax at PricewaterhouseCoopers, formerly the deputy director of corporate tax and VAT and head of the transfer pricing group at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC); Peter Nias head of the London office tax department at McDermott, Will & Emery; and Hartley Foster, a contentious tax practitioner who joined law firm Olswang earlier this year to develop its tax disputes team.
