Commissioner revises tax bill on software licence earnings from 1999 to 2005 in groundbreaking ruling
The Indian tax authorities have landed Microsoft with an extra tax bill of $175 million. This follows a ruling which revalues the royalties from various licences for its software products, and therefore the tax incurred, as nearly three times greater than that originally assessed by the Income Tax department. Indian law firms say that Microsoft has every reason to appeal.
